PENS system of e-marketing

I recommend is the PENS system of e-marketing for ecommerce and business blog applications:

Promote Expertise, Not Sales:

That's it. That's all you really need to know.

I at first claimed to have invented this. On second thought, I deleted that claim. It's just a blend of Immanuel Levinas, Seth Godin, Cluetrain Manifesto, Gonzo Marketing, Naked Conversations, and Tim Berners-Lee.

Is your blog a tech blog?

Include expert or user reviews of tech products, downloads, social media software, blogging trends, blogospheric news, analysis of MSM, critiques of tech books, photos of online oddities, geek humor, javascript games, polls, feedback forms, recommended web tools, remarks about--and quotes from--internet or computer pioneers you admire.

Whatever your blog is about, showcase your skills, your creations, photos of what you make, links to online articles you wrote, screenshots of web sites you built, examples of Open Source code you authored.

Sure, you can display a cool branded t-shirt with your logo on it, for sale.

Or offer a paid PDF e-book download, for sale.

Just don't try to use your blog as a billboard for ads or as a vending machine to churn out on-site sales. That atmosphere, often simulating a circus or madhouse, is repulsive to most web users.

Promote Your Expertise...and fans will expect, even demand, products from you.

Let your customers coax products out of you, rather than hyping and jiving them toward junk.
